Africa Hitech is more than a name; it is an ideology - one that embodies its members’ passions for an eclectic diaspora of electronic styles, from soul, dub and acid to UK garage, grime, techno, house and Jamaican dancehall. Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek stand at the intersection of all these styles and the result is a synthesizer fuelled syncopated percussion and bass madness.

Africa Hitech, AKA Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek, will release their first album this May through Warp, entitled 93 Million Miles.

Pritchard is probably best known as half of the '90s ambient duo Global Communication (he also produces as Harmonic 313). Spacek first made a splash 10 years ago with his own ambient group, simply called Spacek, and since then has worked solo and in projects like Space Invadas (he also happens to be the brother of drum & bass artist D-Bridge). The two producers first teamed up as Africa Hitech at the Red Bull Music Academy in 2007 and have put out two EPs for Warp since then, both of which flirt with elements of dubstep, grime and funky. All of the tracks on 93 Million Miles are previously unreleased, except for Out in the Streets, which is available as of today through Bleep. As with their last two records, the sleeve design is done by the artist Andy Gilmore.

Atlanta based producer, and part-owner of EMBASSY RECORDINGS Distal has found himself rapidly building an internationally familiar brand in 2010.

Combining time travel with dance music Distal breaks down the more ambiguous sounds from the past and fuses them with thoughts and equations of the future. Because of this non-traditional approach to Dubstep, Funky and Techno, Distal has been forced to take a few risks, but along the way has created a very specific and friendly sound for himself.

Bridging the gap between techno, breakbeat hardcore, house, funk, gangster rap, and even pop culture, is a tricky formula to entertain. This enthusiasm has already gained the attention of many well-respected shamans and pioneers working in Dubstep and Techno today. Most recently his first two releases under Embassy have graced the track listings of Appleblim, 2562, Joe Nice, Moldy, Ramadanman, BenUFO, Julio Bashmore, Breakage, and Moldy The list of recognition is set to grow in March 2010 with three releases due out ( Rogue Dubs, Car Crash Set, and Embassy ).

In 2010 after causing some commotion locally and over the internet, Magnum joined forward-thinking club music label, Nightshifters, based in Berlin and run by DJ Donna Summer and Jubilee to remix Canblaster's “Triple Ring” for Canblaster's debut EP and then release his own debut EP “Grooveworks” in May 2011, which showcases some harsher, heavier rave vibes and gets remixed by top new-weirdos: Hostage, Panteros666 from Club Cheval fame, Randomer and Lucid. In the following months Magnum released “Schemes” on Future of Bass 1, a compilation cured by HxdB for US based label Gradient Audio and remixed Bosstone, Emmerson & Klauser, MadJazz and Lao. His sophomore EP “Visions” came out on Belgium based label Inhale on October 2011 and recieved early support from 2562, Randomer, Norrit and Resketch among many others. Fall/Winter plans for Magnum in 2011 include a forthcoming release on UK based label 92 Points as well as more new tunes, more remixing, more shows and launching his own label Tribe.

PRDC has shared vibes in massive events with Mala, Simbad, Worthy, Ramadanman, Zed Bias, Martyn, 2562 / A Made Up Sound, Gemmy, Appleblim, Rob Sparx, Dfrnt, Untold, Reso, Hellfire Machina, Nero… and will continue to dominate the local dubstep scene.

Cutting a two metre shadow, with blue eyes and red hair - its not hard to miss the sky scraping figure of Chris Sylvester, aka Inxec. As an ever rising talent with an ability not yet fully blossomed, Inxec produces music from his beloved house right through to heart breaking, thought inspiring mood sections for national radio plays here in Germany. There is no stop button in sight.
Born in the early Eighties, Chris was never really inspired by music until much later on. He never played with his dads samplers or sneaking in late at night from illegal raves. He was much more the average child. He shone a light for girls and football … unfortunately neither really took a shine to him so...
Fast forward. It’s the late 90’s. Trance is cool and drinking now legal young Chris got hot into the dance scene by spending most Saturdays in Sheffield’s prime dance spot, Gatecrasher. The penny drops and the journey begins in earnest.
The beat making begin and the wheels of Chris’s career in musical architecture had been set in motion. His early works were manufactured on an unlikely catalyst to this story, the Playstation. Choice of software? Music 2000.
As one could imagine, it took a while for things to really take shape and of course, stepping up to a more professional level of software was needed in order to create a paradigm shift. Up stepped Reason software. He has stuck with Propellerheads’ finest creation ever since.
Early signings included artistry for labels such as Distinctive and Renaissance recordings before Chris really found his mark in Inxec with Contexterrior records. With five delectable releases on the forward thinking Techno label, Inxec has gained respect for pushing the boundaries and never having to move away from the direction he has wanted for his sound - mostly down to the belief of his label owner Jay Haze, who has gifted the world with Inxex’s pioneering flavour.
Now a frequent dj and live act across the globe, and with a recent residency at Munich’s Harry Klein club, Inxec is becoming a definitive name worldwide. With Upcoming releases on such labels as Cocoon and Stock 5 in the early part of this year, Mr. Sylvester will shine on us all.

How did the opportunity come about to produce music for a scene in Darren Aronofsky’s film ‘Black Swan’?

>> Mary Anne Hobbs knows Clint Mansell (Director of the film’s soundtrack) from the days when he was the lead singer in Pop Will Eat Itself. She was doing a tour in the States and met up with Clint. He told her about the film and asked if she could send him some music for the bar/club scene in the film, so she sent him a load of tracks to listen to and they picked out ten they liked. One of them was my track ‘When I Rest I Rust’. They got in contact with me about producing a piece of music inspired by Tchaikovsky’s score for Swan Lake. Of the ten they contacted, four of us made the cut, myself being one of them. <<

On Halloween's Eve, Gemmy delivered ...

Puerto Rico had its first bristolian dubstep DJ and producer, Gemmy, playing a massive 2 hour set for the Hallow's Eve main event. The atmosphere was ominous, yet Gemmy delivered a fully balanced, well thought out, flawless mix. It boasted those influential reggae-dub beats, oldskool/original dubstep soundz, and of course, some of that Purple Trinity biz. In it we recognized lots of Bristol's own HENCH material, alongside tracks from Jakes, Joker, RSD, Benga, Redlight and even some Von D. This guy has a production album about to drop in the near future, so you can expect loads of his own/new material on this one.

Sometime in 2007 a subsection of dubstep broke cover and headed off in a new direction. Starting in Bristol, it shot over the channel and headed for the middle ground between itself and Berlin to unite in a shared love of Jamaican bass, delay and space with a little Detroit groove. Appleblim is largely responsible and perhaps the most recognized player of this outbreak. Detroit and E...uro techno's influence on dubstep had moved to the background before Appleblim and friends began to gather momentum. Now an entire sub-movement underneath the dubstep umbrella the boundaries between dubby techno and techy dubstep seem to have dissolved thanks to him.

Currently and originally hailing from Bristol, Appleblim spent some time in London in the 90’s where he like many of dubstep's pioneers caught the jungle bug and through it, developed a love of dub, bass and dark spaces that would keep him in good stead later. Along with Shackleton he formed the unique Skull Disco label, which became best known for releasing Shackleton's, uniquely dark, paranoid and organic percussion, while Appleblim was quietly working on his direction as a DJ and collaborating with the likes of Ramadaman, Peverelist, Al Tourette’s and Komonazmuk among other main players in the scene to forge his own sound. He has since started the Apple Pips label and has been making the rounds at the most progressive clubs and festivals worldwide with his influential interpretation of dubstep.

NORMAN JAY AND BACARDI COLLABORATE TO SUPPORT PIONEERING NEW U.K. MUSIC

London, July 2010

BACARDI Superior rum is collaborating with music pioneer Norman Jay, MBE, to support breakthrough music acts this summer. The legendary DJ will work with the world’s first white rum to nurture the talents of three new UK music artists.

With Norman Jay’s guidance, each artist will create a distinctive version of the rumba, preserving the original elements, but basing it within their own individual genre, combining UK beat based music with the rhythms of Latin America.

Known for pioneering cocktails – such as the Mojito and Cuba Libre – BACARDI rum also has a rich heritage in music, particularly the rumba, and has been hosting legendary parties since 1862. In more recent times (the past 13 years), BACARDI B-LIVE has become a popular fixture at Festivals building upon this vibrant musical legacy.

Norman Jay made a name for himself in the 1980s discovering and nurturing emerging talent, recruiting Jazzie B, Giles Peterson, Trevor ‘The Lick’ Nelson and Judge Jules (a moniker actually provided by Norman himself) to his pirate radio stations KISS. The three U.K. artists will work with Norman Jay to focus their inspiration, and he will guide them to create stand-out tracks which showcase the best of their abilities, across their respective genres.

The three artists chosen are Reso, Untold, and Disco Bloodbath.

27 year-old Reso (aka Alex Melia) pours his frenetic energy and love of breakbeat rhythms into his dubstep/breaks/techno productions. His natural love of drumming shines through creating rich musical textures which really set him apart. Fervent support from Mary Anne Hobbs and Rob Da Bank means that his album, due November 2010, is highly anticipated by fans from all electronic genres.

Starting out as a producer from his bedroom, Untold (aka Jack Dunning) has been releasing bass-heavy electronic house on Hessle Audio since 2008, with his 12” release Anaconda showing the electronic world they had a new artist with a highly distinctive sound to get their teeth into. As keen to discover new music as he is to produce his own, Untold also runs his own label, Hemlock.

Disco Bloodbath – Damon Martin, Dan Beaumont and Ben Pistor – began life as an irregular East London basement party. Their unique blend of raw disco, spaced-out italo, vintage house and proto-techno has taken the Bloodbath sound to some of the UK’s most discerning dancefloors including Fabric, Bugged Out, Bestival, The Big Chill, secretsundaze, Horse Meat Disco, Lovebox, The Warehouse Project and Matter.

“I’m really looking forward to working with these acts to create some great tracks” said Norman Jay. “For me, music has always been about discovering new influences, and taking inspiration from them to create something new and original. That’s exactly what I’m hoping to help these young artists achieve. We’ve identified them specifically for their passion, fire, and their influence within their own genres and the underground scene.”

Our friends at the respected "Drowned in Sound" music portal have compiled a series of must-look-at articles, in celebration of Dubstep's 10 years. Even though it wasn't always DUBSTEP, Rory Gibb explains to us the complexities of this ever changin' genre... the true evolution of the UK's pirate sounds and the underground bass scene. A little bit of history, ranging out to the most shining, game changing, evolutionary productions over these years.

"Ten or so years ago, when this very site was the merest glimmer in the eye of an internet still largely running at 56k, UK garage was at the peak of its commercial power. Rising from the ashes of the original rave movement via the second rooms of early jungle nights, it had fast become a mainstream force far exceeding that of its closest relatives. The two-step beat was everywhere, finding its way into chart hits across the board and making unlikely, if fairly temporary, stars of Craig David and even Daniel Bedingfield (yikes). But within the next year or two the entire scene - one that had been built over several years of hard work and innovation beneath the surface of the mainstream - simply imploded. What had once been a tight knit community collapsed in on itself under the weight of champagne 'n' cocaine excesses and infighting. UK garage all but disappeared from charts and clubs, splintering into a dense outward spray of modified forms. Some producers headed towards the wider regions of house. But centred around the London pirate station Rinse FM other less easily definable sounds began to coalesce, within the urban crucibles of East and South London – the earliest forms of dubstep and grime." Mary Anne Hobbs... a legacy

Way before owning the Sonar Festival LAB stage, Mary Anne Hobbs had us fed by a future sounds / experimental musik feast. Her open platform at the BBC Radio1 gave her the tools to scatter out to the world what the true dubstep sound was all about, and better yet, how it evolved over the years 'till the likes of today. Back in 2007 she exploited the sound through Hyperdub's Kode9 in Sonar, without knowing how the people in Barcelona was going to react... until Kode's words in a beginning set went gleaming: "They comin'. They loving it. This is IT!".

Not so lucky for us fans, and after a 14 years career, she has decided to retire from her position at the BreezeBlock/Experimental show to pursue other goals (teaching), and is set to leave BBC on September 2010.

Now she retires from her platform in the up-most point of her musical career. 2010 had the "real Queen of England" throwing bombs at her LAB stage alongside of one of 2009 most prominent producers, Joy Orbison; LA's BrainFeeder Cru mastermind and Low End Theory resident, FlyLo; and UK Funky/Garage sensation Roska... for a wicked, devastating, blown-out 10,000 strong massive, 4th year in a row. Now lucky us, she'll be keeping her Lab stage in the forthcoming.

Stay tuned 'cuz she promises to deliver in August 2010... with the likes of Ramadanman, Skream & Joker.

An excellent Double Bass, Piano and Guitar player, Rob Sparx has been writing and DJing dance music since the late 90s. Robs first release in Jan 2004 "Rob the Builder - Can you fix it", was the start of a wave of drum n bass releases on Twisted Individual's label's Grid, Zombie and Up Yours. Rob has also released DNB on Formation records, Propaganda, Vibez (Subject13) and label/distributor Z-Audio. Never one to be pigeonholed Rob soon experimented with other genres producing breaks, house/electro and dubstep most of which was released by labels associated with Z-Audio. Although dubstep is now his main style Rob also writes trance for Armin Van Buren's Armada imprint and has just started 2 of his own dubstep labels "Sour Grapes" and "Migration" distributed by Z-Audio. A 3rd Label “Sub Horizon” will also be launched early next year.

Owing to the diverse range of music he produces Robs tunes have been played by a wide selection of DJ's including: Zane Lowe, Kissy Sellout, Eddy Temple Morris, Nerm, Pathaan, Joe Ransom, Skream, N-Type, Distance, Benga, Darkside, TRG, N-Type, Scientist, Walsh, Rusko, Tes La Rok, Sukh Knight, Grooverider, Bryan G, Bailey, Dieselboy, LDouble, Marky, Nicky Blackmarket, Flyte, Ash Attack, James Zabelia, Nick Warren, Anthony Pappa, Laurent Garnier, Colin Dale, Gabriel Ananda, Quivver and 10Sui! Robs tunes have featured on stations including Radio 1, 1XTRA (In mixes on Mary Anne Hobbs show plus a set & interview on Nerms Electro East show), KissFM, RinseFM and Ministry Radio. Artists Rob has worked with include Distance, Cyrus (Random Trio), Reso, Propatingz, TRG, El-B, Tunnidge (Deep Medi), Numbernin6, Synkro, Radikal Guru, Bar9, Nero, D-Ranged, Subject13, Phantasy & Shodan, Twisted Individual, Zen, Sharooz, Tom Pooks, Pablo Bolivar and Mike Foyle (Armada).

2009 saw the release of Rob’s 2cd album Trooper with vinyl samplers which includes remixes from Distance, TRG, Reso, Bar9, Synkro & Indigo and received many great reviews from magazines such as Knowledge (“an unpretentious masterpiece”), IDJ (“impressive throughout”), ATM (“Very well produced dubstep”) and inet sites like Getdarker (“A well crafted mix of tracks”). Since finishing the album last year Rob hit the DJing playing alongside the likes of Skream, Benga, Caspa & Joker plus touring Europe with gigs in Poland, Belgium and Holland with a 3 week US/Canada tour currently being planned for 2010.

DFRNT is a 26 year old Scottish producer and DJ working out of Edinburgh. Currently, DFRNT produces music, runs the Echodub label and collective, is editor for Modus magazine, and writes the SittingOvation blog.

With debut album "Metafiction" released in late 2009 on On The Edge records, DFRNT has seen support from many of the worlds top dubstep producers and DJs, from heavier hitters like N-Type, Baobinga and Headhunter, to deeper selectors such as Synkro, Scuba or dub-techno don Quantec.

In November 2009, he was asked to put together a mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ legendary BBC Radio 1 show, and since that airplay, he has scheduled releases on a number of labels including On The Edge, Futurism Recordings, the tentracks initiative and his own imprint Echodub.

With his album Metafiction, DFRNT really pushed the deeper side of the dubstep and electronic sound, and backing this up with remixes from big players such as Scuba, Ital Tek, Quantec, Synkro, Indigo and DJ Madd - he took his sound towards the dancefloor.

The Z Boys have been rocking the local electronic music scene in Puerto Rico since the year 2000. This group came to be after DJ's Christopher Alexander Brown(aka Shaggy, aka Alexander Cuba) and Hugh Harry Hillebrand, met at an after-hours party held in the now legendary club "The Warehouse" in 1999. Luis Romero also know as Fission hails from Bayamon PR. Around the year 2000 Luis teamed up with Arthur aka Kaiser to work under the name Fission. they did a bunch of tunes and started to play at local events getting more involved in the scene. They released together their first release in 2002 on Transparent Recordings, Friction and Nu Balance's label, the tunes were Oracle & Halo, one of the most famous tracks in the early Fission days was a record called Slave for Technical Freaks album, it had good support by some DJ's such as Dylan, Technical Itch, Ink, Loxy to name a few. after that Fission was no longer a stranger in the UK Drum & Bass scene.

El próximo jueves 1 de octubre de 2009, inaugura la exhibición individual del artista Edgardo Larregui la cual lleva por título “Material Liberado”. La muestra consiste en la más reciente propuesta del artista, una serie de 40 dibujos originales transferidos en láser sobre hojas de cristal y plexiglass. La obra del artista, representa la preocupación sobre el bio-terrorismo a nivel mundial, aludiendo a la creación de virus, bacterias, gérmenes y otros patógenos con intención de luego ser incorporados a la humanidad por los grandes imperios de la era actual con fines de lucrarse.

"Material Liberado" estará en exhibición por todo el mes de octubre y puede ser visitada en Galería Yemayá entre miércoles y sábado de 11am-6pm o por cita previa . Computer Club: Like the final round of a videogame tournament, Computer Club’s music is loud, aggressive and spattered with grimy funk. A tendency toward the heavy, distortion-tinged sound of electro house is well balanced with his penchant for funk-laden interludes amongst the banger blitz.

The Computer Club sound first emerged from the studio of Mike Diasio in 2007 when System Recordings, one of the largest electronic music labels in the United States, tapped him to sign the single “Load Rocket.” The song, one of the first completed by Diasio under the geeky guise, carried Computer Club’s name into both traditional record label outlets and the burgeoning music blogosphere alike – a trend rarely seen in the heavily populated landscape of today’s dance music. Original songs like “Flat Response” and “Laptop Levitation” showcase Computer Club’s highly honed sound design and audio engineering skills, while his remixes of Nine Inch Nails, Prince and New Order illustrate his ability to adapt the best of the big names to the dancefloor.

Along with his impressive studio output, Computer Club is a well-accomplished DJ by any measure. His steady stream of gigs has him traveling to every corner of North America with regular stops in New York City, San Francisco and everywhere in between. From rocking a 30,000-strong crowd at L.A.’s Nocturnal Festival to dropping an intimate set for his former home of Atlanta, Computer Club constantly exhibits his deftness and versatility behind the decks.

While recent releases such as a remix of Mr. Oizo’s “Flat Beat” and his re-working of Konflict’s legendary Drum & Bass anthem “Messiah” with fellow producer/DJ Le Castle Vania have helped propel his name to new heights, Computer Club has started working on his debut album. Tentatively titled “Nerd Secrets,” the full-length promises to showcase a wide swath of musical styles, ranging from dancefloor-filling, hands-in-the-air bangers to straightforward rock songwriting to experimental weirdness.

In addition to his newly-minted Computer Club moniker, Mike continues to push the boundaries of dance music as one third of Evol Intent, a hard-hitting Drum & Bass trio considered by many fans and DJs alike to be the UK-rooted genre’s most talented American group. Initially known as purveyors of the toughest brand of D&B, their debut album “Era of Diversion” exhibits a musical variety influenced by everyone from Radiohead and Aphex Twin to Slayer and N.W.A.
